Concrete was used as a building material thousands of years ago. Romans used a low strength concrete to construct the Parthenon and Colosseum. However, after the fall of Rome the science of building with concrete was lost until the early 1800’s. It took the discovery of reinforcing steel in the 1880’s to fully utilize the capabilities of reinforced concrete.
